University have claimed the biggest scalp of their season - along with The Caxton Cup - with a close fought 23-20 win over the high flying Souths Magpies.
Fly-half Jono Lance was a standout throughout, continuing his impressive run of recent performances, scoring a try and proving ever dangerous down the middle of the field.
Souths, who scored three tries to two, had several opportunities to win the match late in the game but were unable to turn them into points.
The Magpies were also hurt by missed attempts at goal, and only led 10-3 after scoring two early tries.
Uni coach Mick Heenan said the key to the upset win was self belief.
"We have been competitive all season, I think we just lacked a bit of self belief, and we turned that around today.
"One of the goals we set ourselves early in the season was to beat one of the top teams, and we achieved that today."
Souths coach Dan McKellar said his team was unable to match the enthusiasm of the visiting side.
"We started ok, but I think they had too much energy for us and we were out enthused in the end."
McKellar said Souths will need to pick up their attitude for next week's top of the table clash with in-form Easts.
"To be competitive next week we'll have to really show up ready to play."
University 23 (J Hanson, J Lance tries, J Lance 2 cons 3 pens) defeated Souths 20 (W Tilagucaguca, A Vuli Vuli, K Vosuqa tries, Q Cooper con, penalty).
