How to become a match official
1. You must be SmartRugby compliant and this allows entry into officiating for both Pathway and 15 a side Rugby. SmartRugby courses are held regularly between February and June.
2. Referee associations like the QRRA (Brisbane) appoint referees to most matches run by schools, juniors, suburban and QRU. To referee those matches you must be a member of an association. For all other matches whilst not compulsory you are strongly advised to join an Association as this ensures that you are registered on Myrugbyadmin, receive all information about officiating and are kept up to date on Laws.
3. Joining an association and meeting commitment requirements as well as being assessed as competent will entitle you to wear the Association strip.
4. The association will arrange for you to be viewed on a match and provide some feed back about how you manage the game. All new match officials are generally also invited to practical seminars to instruct you on the best practice for being a match official.
5. To achieve Level 1 accreditation you will need to be checked for competency by a QRU Assessor. This involves completion by you of a diary for your first 5 matches and a Safety and Competency endorsement by the Assessor.
6. A Foundation Course (which is largely about player coaching coupled with aspects of refereeing) is also run from time to time by the QRU.
7. Once you are registered as a referee you may act as an Assistant Referee and report on incidents in the back play.
8. All referees are required to have a Blue Card or be exempt in terms of Queensland Government Legislation. Application forms and information relating to this subject can be found on the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian web site www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au or by phoning 1800113611.
