Super Rugby

To provide women in Rugby with the support and pathways to advance their personal, professional and sporting careers.

Queensland Rugby Union is improving pathways for female players to pursue a professional rugby career in both Sevens and XV’s.

Since its inception, the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) Women’s Sevens Academy at Ballymore has seen five players earn contracts with the Australian squad. Demi Hayes, who is currently on a development contract with the Australian squad, was also one of three QAS graduates who made their debuts for the Australia side at the Canada Sevens event in Langford, 2016, where the Australian Women finished third. Of the current group of 21 contracted Australian Women Seven’s players, 11 originate from Queensland.

While in XV’s rugby, Queensland provided 9 players to the Wallaroos Training squad in 2015.

Girls and young women are boosting participation figures and joining rugby programs across Queensland in big numbers. Girls and women are recognising the opportunities Rugby offers with Sevens now part of the 2016 Rio Olympic program and also part of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games program and a Rugby World Cup for XV’s in Ireland in 2017.

Key Statistics
- Female participation increased from 32,000 in 2011 to over 125,000 in 2015
- 21 new women’s Sevens teams, 65 new girls club teams, and 73 new secondary school teams
- 58% of the 2015 Youth Commonwealth Games Gold Medal Team were Queenslanders
- Over 50% of the National Contracted Women’s 7’s squad are from Queensland
