QRU Match No. 444 - Queensland Fans Demand Fifty

Queenslanders are Remembering

QRU Match No. 444 - May 20, 1979

Between the watershed 1976 season the conclusion of the highly anticipated 1979 season, Queensland won 41/52 matches, scoring 1559 points and conceding only 532.

QRU Match No. 444, played in front of 15,000 fans at Ballymore, although an outlier in the long list of hard-fought interstate matches, was, in an era when Reds fans expected crushing wins, yet another crushing win.

"Those were heady days, the roar of the crowds at Ballymore, Paddy Batch scoring tries in his favourite scoreboard corner, the chant of "We want fifty!" (Bob Templeton)

The Reds pulled off their sixth consecutive win over New South Wales with a mesmerising display, "capped off by a smashing try from Mark Loane who left Blue jerseys sprawled on the Ballymore turf in the wake of his 30-metre charge." (Red! Red! Red!)

"When rugged Duncan Hall crashed over for Queensland's seventh try to take Queensland to 44 points, the crowd erupted into a frenzy, chanting "WE WANT FIFTY! WE WANT FIFTY!" Right on cue, Peter Grigg crossed the line for his third try just as fulltime sounded but McLean's kick sailed fractionally past the upright."

Regardless, the Ballymore crowd was sated with the 48-10 margin. Queensland had matured from the youthful side that put 42 unanswered points on the Waratahs three years earlier, with another dominant 38-point victory.
