St.George Queensland Reds defeat Bulls at Suncorp Stadium

The St.George Queensland Reds have claimed their second win in as many weeks, defeating the Bulls 20-14 at Suncorp Stadium in Round 4 of Vodafone Super Rugby.
It was a gritty performance from the Reds, with strong defence and set-piece work laying the foundation for their first back-to-back win since 2014.
Reds head coach Brad Thorn said: “It was good to back up last week’s effort with another win at home.
“It wasn’t always pretty but we found a way to win. We’re a work in progress and we are quietly working away.
“It was a great night for Chris Feauai-Sautia to earn his 50th Queensland cap. We’re really proud of him. You could see how much it meant to him and his teammates.
“We’ve got a tough tour coming up, but we’ll keep working hard and see what we can make of it.”
Both sides crossed for two tries, with the boots of James Tuttle and Jono Lance proving to be the difference. Caleb Timu and Aidan Toua crossed for the Reds.
The Bulls opened up the scoring, turning down two early penalty opportunities to push for a try. They were rewarded in the fifth minute, with Warren Gelant crossing for the first try. Handre Pollard slotted the conversion, giving the visitors a 7-0 lead.
Reds prop Taniela Tupou was held up over the line in the 23rd minute, but an ensuing penalty saw the Reds put their first points on the board, narrowing the margin to 7-3.
The Bulls struck back two minutes later, scoring a long-range try through Andre Riaan Warner. Pollard added the extras, extending the Bulls’ lead to 14-3.
Tuttle and Tupou combined to put Caleb Timu over for the Reds’ first try in the 35th minute. Tuttle slotted the conversion from close to the sideline to narrow the margin to 14-10 before half time.
The Reds opened up the scoring in the second half when Filipo Daugunu, in his first start, darted through a hole before off-loading to Brandon Paenga-Amosa. The hooker quickly shifted the ball to Toua, who outran the chasing Bulls’ defence to cross for the Reds’ second try of the night. Tuttle slotted the conversion to push his side’s lead out to 17-14.
The score remained the same until the 76th minute, when a Lance penalty goal extended their lead to 20-14.
The Bulls held possession deep in the Reds’ half late in the match, but a hit from hooker Alex Mafi on Lood de Jager forced a knock-on, ending the match and securing the Reds’ their second win of the 2018 season.
St.George Queensland Reds 20 (Caleb Timu, Aidan Toua tries; James Tuttle 2 con; Tuttle 1, Lance 1 penalty goals) defeated Bulls 14 (Warrick Gelant, Andre Riaan Warner tries; Handre Pollard 2 con) at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday 10 March 2018.
