Queensland dominates the podium at Aon Uni 7s

Queensland’s three University sides have dominated the podium in the second leg of the Aon Uni 7s Series at Macquarie University yesterday.

In a grand final rematch from the first round, University of Queensland claimed back-to-back tournament wins with a 22-17 win over Bond University.

The lead changed hand four times throughout the grand final match but it was UQ who showed composure to snatch their 10th straight victory at the death.

Queensland’s success on the podium was capped off by Griffith University’s bronze medal finish, which they secured with a 20-5 win over Macquarie University.

As the Aon Uni 7s heads to University of Queensland this weekend, the three Queensland teams sit in first, second and third on the competition ladder.

University of Queensland Captain Mackenzie Sadler said: ‘’Tough game absolutely, we really had to work hard for it.’

‘’Really pumped for next week to have all the people that have been supporting us this whole time be there. It should be a really good day.’’

Bond University and Aussie 7s player Charlotte Caslick said: ‘’Today’s standard was so much higher. I think as a group we played so much better as well. In saying that there’s still so many things we need to work on and I think playing together more often will definitely help that.

‘’It’s a four-series tournament and UQ obviously have 4 points up on us now so hopefully next week we can finish strong and win that early game in the final that would be ideal.’’

Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp said: ‘’Each university’s student-athletes are showing solid performances with a marked improvement from round to round, but the University of Queensland asserted dominance in Round Two with another win following their Round One win in Launceston.

‘’The Series is gaining significant momentum as the teams modify their strategies and channel their focus towards the next leg of the Series.’’

The teams will travel to Brisbane for Round Three of the Aon Uni 7s Series which kicks off on September 16 at the University of Queensland’s home ground.
