Australian Women’s Sevens team win Olympic Gold

The Australian Women’s Sevens team have created history, becoming the first Olympic Gold Medalists in Rugby Sevens, following their 24-17 win over our closest rivals New Zealand in Rio.

In what was a thrilling and physical encounter, the New Zealanders were the first to score, crossing the line five minutes into the first-half.

Emma Tonegato looked to put Australia on the score board with a runaway effort, however got pulled down by the tough New Zealand defence. However, she dived over in the corner moments later, stretching out over the line, drawing the score 5-all.

As the half-time hooter rung, New Zealand were dealt a yellow card leaving them one man down. Queenslander Evania Pelite made the most of the advantage, sprinting down the left hand side of the field to cross for Australia’s second try, taking the score to 10-5 at the half-time break.

After a bit of a shaky start from the Australians in the second half, Queenslanders Charlotte Caslick and Emilee Cherry showed some fancy footwork and ball skills before passing to winger Ellia Green who crossed for Australia’s third try, furthering the Australian lead.

After a knock on from New Zealand in Australia’s territory, quick thinking from Caslick secured Australia’s fourth try.

The Kiwis crossed for two late tries but it was two late for the New Zealanders. Australia claimed the 24-17 win and the first ever Women’s Rugby Sevens Olympic Gold Medal.

Queensland’s Charlotte Caslick said: “We didn’t have the best start to the game but we had so much belief in each other, there wasn’t a second out there that we doubted each other and we got over the line.

‘We had so many messages of support flowing in and we’re so grateful and hopefully we made Australia proud.

“This has been the hardest four years of my life but it was all worth it and I can’t wait to through the next four years ahead of Tokyo.”

After being crowned world champions after the HSBC Womens Sevens World Series, the Australian Women can now add Olympic Gold Medalists to their Rugby Sevens resumes.

In the bronze medal final Canada defeated Great Britain 33-10.
